Text Generation with GPT-2 using Hugging Face
Author: Venkata Sudhakar
Text generation is one of the most popular use cases for large language models. The Hugging Face Transformers library makes it easy to load pre-trained generative models like GPT-2 and generate text from a prompt. GPT-2 is an open-source autoregressive language model trained by OpenAI that predicts the next word in a sequence based on context. At ShopMax India, text generation can be used to auto-draft product descriptions from short keyword inputs. The text-generation pipeline in Hugging Face handles tokenization, inference, and decoding automatically. You can control the length and diversity of the generated text using parameters like max_new_tokens, temperature, top_p, and do_sample. A higher temperature increases randomness while a lower value makes the output more deterministic. The below example shows how to generate product description text using GPT-2 with the Hugging Face pipeline.
It gives the following output,
Prompt: The ShopMax ProBook laptop features
Generated: The ShopMax ProBook laptop features a 12th gen Intel Core
i7 processor, 16GB RAM, and a full HD IPS display ideal for
professionals working from home or on the go.
Prompt: ShopMax TurboCharge wireless earbuds offer
Generated: ShopMax TurboCharge wireless earbuds offer up to 30 hours
of playback time with active noise cancellation and a comfortable
over-ear design suitable for long listening sessions.
The do_sample=True flag enables probabilistic sampling which produces varied outputs on each run. Setting do_sample=False makes the model use greedy decoding, always picking the highest probability token at each step. For production use at ShopMax India, generated descriptions should be reviewed by a content editor before publishing to ensure accuracy and brand voice alignment.
